Marymere Falls

Marymere Falls

I came across Marymere Falls by chance. I saw it on the map while I was in the area and decided to hike in and see what was there. Standing at the base, the vertical composition was obvious. I set up the tripod right at the water's edge, just far enough back to keep the spray off the lens, and let the falls fill the frame top to bottom.

The water drops as a single bright column, strikes the massive moss-covered boulder at the center of the frame, and scatters into a cascade that tumbles through rock and fallen timber before pooling at my feet. The vertical format follows that whole journey. Standing that close, with the Olympic rainforest pressing in from every side, the falls felt less like something I was looking at and more like something I was inside.

Color Match

The images on this site are carefully color-managed, but no screen can fully replicate what these photographs look like as finished prints. The depth, color, and detail of a limited edition print on Hahnemühle Baryta Rag goes well beyond what any display can show.

About John

John Shephard grew up in Washington State surrounded by its landscapes and wild places. That connection to the land became the foundation of his work as a panoramic landscape photographer. He shoots exclusively on film, using panoramic cameras that capture a field of view close to what the human eye actually sees.
