Crescendo, Queen Anne
This image is at least fifteen years old, and the Seattle you see here has changed. The skyline has grown significantly — Rainier Square Tower, the Amazon campus, towers across South Lake Union — and this particular view of Mount Rainier sitting on the horizon may no longer be possible.
I had one winter sunrise to work with from a penthouse rooftop on Queen Anne Hill. Minutes earlier, I'd made its companion piece, Prelude, in that deep blue pre-dawn stillness. Then the sky broke open. Pink and gold swept across the clouds and the whole city lit up beneath it. Same tripod, same composition, a completely different image. One sunrise, two of my favorite frames of Seattle — a version of the city that doesn't quite exist anymore.
